WEBSTER, WILLIAM BENNETT, médecin, géologue, homme politique, né le 18 janvier 1798 à Kentville, Nouvelle-Écosse, aîné des trois fils du docteur Isaac Webster et de Prudence Bentley ; il épousa, le 11 septembre 1826, Wilhelmina Moore et ils eurent quatre enfants ; décédé à Halifax, le 4 avril 1861.

Après avoir reçu sa première éducation dans la région de Cornwallis, William Bennett Webster se rendit en Écosse pour y étudier la médecine à l’University of Edinburgh. Après avoir obtenu son diplôme, il fit de nombreux voyages à travers le continent tout en visitant plusieurs cliniques. Vers 1822, il retourna en Nouvelle-Écosse et se fixa à Kentville. Il suivit les traces de son père dans sa profession et fut comme lui presbytérien et d’un esprit créateur. Héritier d’une propriété considérable, il en acquit davantage lui-même. En 1855, il fut élu député du comté de King et siégea jusqu’à la division de la circonscription en 1859. Il fut alors élu dans la division sud du comté de King, poste qu’il conserva jusqu’à sa mort.

Webster était un homme énergique aux multiples intérêts. Il était considéré comme très compétent par ses collègues médecins ; en 1836, il réussit l’ablation d’une cataracte, première opération du genre dans la province. Il participa activement à la fondation de la Nova Scotia Médical Society en 1854 et, en 1858, comme membre de la législature, aida à rédiger une loi qui légalisait la dissection. Il trouvait moyen malgré tout de s’adonner à plusieurs passe-temps, dans l’un desquels il se distingua tout autant que dans sa profession. Géologue amateur, il étudia les minéraux de la région de Blomidon, en collaboration avec son beau-frère, Abraham Gesner ; il réussit à monter une remarquable collection géologique que sa veuve allait offrir plus tard au Provincial Museum de la Nouvelle-Écosse. Il découvrit un fossile intéressant qui fut nommé Dictyonema Websteri en son honneur. Webster laissa également son nom comme inventeur « d’appareils mécaniques ». Son intérêt pour la planification urbaine l’amena à concevoir le tracé actuel des principales rues de Kentville.
