PAPINEAU, dit Montigny, SAMUEL, soldat, censitaire des Sulpiciens à la côte Saint-Michel, île de Montréal, né à Montigny en Poitou, fils de Samuel Papineau, commerçant, et de Marie Delain (Delair), inhumé le 23 avril 1737 à Sault-au-Récollet.

Samuel Papineau faisait partie de la compagnie du sieur d’Andresy, arrivée à Québec en 1688 ; ce dernier, décédé au cours de la traversée, fut remplacé par M. Aloigny de La Groye. Durant dix ans, Papineau servit fidèlement sous MM. Buade* de Frontenac et de Callière, puis il fut licencié. Le 25 avril 1699, il acquit des Sulpiciens une concession de 60 arpents à la côte Saint-Michel. Il vendit cette terre à Jean Guillebert, dit Laframboise, en 1705, et obtint un nouveau titre de concession à la Rivière-des-Prairies en 1711, titre qu’il conserva jusqu’à son décès en 1737. Il ne laissait que peu de biens, comme l’atteste l’inventaire après décès.

Le 6 juin 1704, Samuel Papineau avait épousé, à la Rivière-des-Prairies, Catherine Quevillon (1686–1781) et ils eurent neuf enfants. Cette dernière avait été enlevée par les Iroquois et rachetée après plusieurs années de captivité ; elle se maria quatre fois et mourut à l’âge de 95 ans.

Simple soldat, Samuel Papineau s’occupa surtout des terres qui lui furent concédées à partir de 1699. Il est l’ancêtre des familles Papineau du Canada.
