MAUGUE, CLAUDE, notaire, greffier, substitut du procureur général, né vers 1646 dans la paroisse de Saint-Amand, diocèse de Clermont-Ferrand (Auvergne), fils d’Antoine Maugue, marchand, et de Françoise Rigaud, décédé à Montréal le 9 novembre 1696.

C’est le 17 avril 1673 que Maugue est mentionné pour la première fois au Canada, dans un acte qu’il signe à Beauport en qualité de témoin : « sieur Claude Maugue regent precepteur pour les enfäns du dit bourg du fargy ». Le 9 décembre suivant, le gouverneur de Buade de Frontenac le nommait notaire de la seigneurie de Lauson. À ce titre, Maugue dressa 19 actes, surtout de concessions de terres.

Appelé à Montréal en 1677, il succéda à Bénigne Basset au poste de greffier de la juridiction, qu’il occupa pendant sept ans, tout en continuant d’y instrumenter comme notaire. En 19 années, il signa quelque 3 000 actes, qui nous sont parvenus en parfait état.

Substitut du procureur général de Montréal en 1692, Maugue s’éteignit dans la cinquantaine, après une brève maladie. Il fut enseveli à Montréal le 10 novembre 1696.

Il avait épousé à Montréal, le 24 octobre 1679, Louise Jousset qui, en 1698, convola avec Jean de La Sague.
