LE ROY DESMAREST, CLAUDE-JOSEPH (il signait habituellement Desmarest, à de rares occasions Leroy Desmarest), notaire royal, greffier de la cour de l’amirauté et du Conseil supérieur de l’île Royale (île du Cap-Breton), procureur du roi au bailliage de Louisbourg, né vers 1695 à Trévoux, en Bourgogne, fils de Catherin Le Roy, notaire, et de Jeanne-Marie Boyat, décédé le 1er juillet 1737 à Louisbourg, île Royale.

On ne trouve aucune trace de la présence de Desmarest dans la colonie avant son mariage célébré à Louisbourg le 8 avril 1728. Il épousa Marie-Suzanne de La Bazanière, de La Rochelle, fille de Louise Briet et de Pierre de La Bazanière, navigateur, et veuve de Jean-François Lorant de Louisbourg. Au moins six enfants naquirent de ce mariage.

Au cours du même mois, soit en avril 1728, il fut choisi pour remplir la fonction de notaire royal à l’île Royale. Puis, encore à l’île Royale, il fut nommé successivement, en mars 1729, greffier de la cour de l’amirauté, et greffier du Conseil supérieur. Il était désigné sous ce dernier titre dès septembre 1730. On le nomma procureur du roi au bailliage de Louisbourg en mai 1735. À sa mort, survenue en 1737, il cumulait les quatre fonctions. Un inventaire détaillé des propriétés et des valeurs mobilières qui lui avaient appartenu, en communauté de biens avec sa femme, fut dressé en 1741.
