GARLAND, THOMAS, marin au service de la Hudson’s Bay Company ; circa 1678–1687.

Il partit pour la baie James en 1678, à bord du Prince Rupert (capitaine : Richard Power), et revint en Angleterre l’année suivante. En 1680, on lui confia la direction des opérations commerciales à New Severn, où le capitaine Thomas Draper avait été chargé d’établir et de diriger un comptoir, tâche qu’on n’avait pas encore pu mener à bonne fin.

L’hiver 1681–1682, que Garland passa à l’île Charlton, sous les ordres du gouverneur John NixoN, fut marqué par des dissensions. Garland se rangea du côté « des mécontents » qui soutenaient le capitaine Nehemiah Walker contre Nixon. Ce dernier expédia en Angleterre un long réquisitoire à ce sujet. En dépit de ce rapport défavorable, Garland, à son retour en Angleterre, fut nommé commandant du yacht Colleton en 1683. Il passa les trois saisons suivantes dans la baie James et il était du nombre de ceux qui furent pris en 1686 quand de Troyes s’empara des trois factoreries de la compagnie dans cette région. Il réussit à se faire libérer et passa l’hiver soit à New Severn, soit à Port Nelson, dans la baie d’Hudson. Il quitta le service de la compagnie après son retour en Angleterre en 1687.

Les archives de la compagnie mentionnent à diverses reprises sa femme, Catherine, qui demandait que son mari fût autorisé à rentrer chez lui.
