ELLIS, JOHN, imprimeur et musicien, baptisé le 21 janvier 1795 à Cley-next-the-Sea, dans le Norfolk, fils d’Anne Ellis, décédé le 19 novembre 1877 près de Toronto.

En 1836, John Ellis était, semble-t-il, confortablement installé à Londres. Il avait un commerce dans la cité sur la rue Old Broad et faisait partie de la Goldsmiths’ Company ; il possédait deux propriétés dans l’Essex ; sa femme, Rhoda Anne Benton, qu’il avait épousée huit ans auparavant, venait de mettre au monde leur premier enfant. Mais, cette année-là, il vendit ce qu’il possédait à Londres ; en août, la famille se mit en route pour le Canada et arriva à Toronto en octobre. Pendant un an ou deux, Ellis « défricha », à l’ouest de la ville, une terre attenante à celle de John George Howard*.

Au début des années 40, Ellis ouvrit à Toronto un atelier de gravure qui, par la suite, se développa au point de pouvoir exécuter d’importants travaux de lithographie, par exemple le Plan of Toronto aux environs de 1858. La papeterie était probablement le commerce principal de la maison. En 1867, Joseph T. Rolph acheta cette firme, qui fusionna avec d’autres entreprises et qui est devenue de nos jours la lithographie Rolph-Clark-Stone, Limited.

Ellis était un fervent violoncelliste amateur, apparemment très doué, et il joua un rôle important dans la vie musicale encore embryonnaire de la ville. En 1845, il fonda avec le révérend John McCaul* la Toronto Philharmonic Society et fit partie de son conseil pendant de nombreuses années. Il fut aussi un des fondateurs et chef d’orchestre de la Toronto Vocal Music Society.

Ellis était anglican et conservateur et fut l’un des premiers membres de la St Georges Society de Toronto. Lorsqu’il se retira des affaires, il alla vivre dans son ancienne résidence dominant la baie de Humber où il mourut en 1877.
