APTHORP, ALEXANDER, magasinier au service de la Hudsons Bay Company au fort York de 1714 à 1718. Il fit partie de l’expédition de James Knight et mourut vers 1720.

Alexander Apthorp était avec James Knight en 1714 quand ce dernier accepta, au nom de la compagnie, la restitution du fort York (fort Bourbon) par les Français selon les clauses du traité d’Utrecht. On ne sait pas grand-chose d’Apthorp, mais les livres de compte qu’il a tenus au fort York de 1714 à 1717 existent encore et offrent un excellent exemple du genre de comptabilité qu’on pratiquait à la baie d’Hudson au xviie siècle. Dans la seule lettre qui reste de lui et qui n’est pas aussi claire que ses livres de compte, il décrit les effets de l’inondation au fort York au printemps de 1715.

En 1718, Apthorp retourna à Londres avec Knight qui projetait un voyage de découverte au nord de Churchill, à la recherche du détroit d’Anian et des gisements de cuivre et d’or dont il avait entendu parler par les Indiens du Nord. Apthorp, qui s’embarqua avec Knight à Londres en 1719, est un des sept membres de l’expédition dont on connaît le nom. Les deux vaisseaux de l’expédition firent naufrage près de la pointe sudest de l’île Marble en 1720, mais on ne sait rien de précis sur le sort d’Apthorp et de ses compagnons.
