GIFFARD, MARIE-FRANÇOISE, dite Marie de Saint-Ignace, religieuse hospitalière de l’Hôtel-Dieu de Québec, première religieuse canadienne, fille de Robert Giffard et de Marie Regnouard, décédée en 1657.

En 1634, Giffard, gratifié d’une concession seigneuriale, revenait en Nouvelle-France accompagné de sa femme et de ses deux enfants. Le 12 juin, neuf jours après leur arrivée à Québec, Françoise fut baptisée par le père Charles Lalemant. À l’automne de 1646, elle entrait en religion à l’Hôtel-Dieu de Québec. Elle reçut le nom de la supérieure fondatrice, décédée le 5 novembre.

La nièce de Marie-Françoise Giffard, mère Juchereau* de Saint-Ignace, a tracé d’elle un portrait qui semble authentique : « Elle était pleine d’esprit, douée d’une grande douceur et d’une prudence au-dessus de son âge. Son innocence et sa pureté étaient angéliques ; elle avait une humilité sincère et profonde, une charité ardente et une fidélité exacte à tout souffrir pour Dieu. » Mère Giffard de Saint-Ignace mourut à Québec le 15 mars 1657 après de terribles souffrances. Elle fut inhumée sous le chœur de la chapelle de l’Hôtel-Dieu. Ses contemporains admiraient sa sainteté.
