TESTARD DE LA FOREST, GABRIEL, officier, commandant du fort Bourbon (baie d’Hudson), né en 1661, à Montréal, de Jacques Testard de La Forest et de Marie Pournin, décédé à Londres en 1697.

En 1694, il participa, sous Pierre Le Moyne* d’Iberville, à la capture du fort Bourbon (York Factory). Quittant le fort, au début de septembre 1695, d’Iberville y laissa une garnison d’environ 70 hommes dont il confia le commandement à La Forest. L’année suivante, le fort fut assiégé par cinq navires anglais, dont deux vaisseaux de guerre. Deux bateaux français qui, trop tard, apportaient du secours, s’en étaient retournés en France. Après trois jours de bombardement, Testard de La Forest capitula, le 1er septembre 1696. Le commandant des forces anglaises, le capitaine William Allen, avait accordé des conditions très honorables : les honneurs de la guerre, la conservation des fourrures de l’année, le transport de toute la garnison à Plaisance (Placentia, T.-N.). Au mépris de la capitulation, cependant, il confisqua les fourrures et emmena les Français prisonniers en Angleterre.

Arrivé à Plymouth en octobre, La Forest porta ses plaintes devant les lords commissaires du Conseil du commerce, et rapport fut fait au Privy Council. Mais l’affaire traîna en longueur. Testard mourut à Londres le 27 août 1697. Ses réclamations furent transmises aux plénipotentiaires français qui obtinrent gain de cause par suite de l’article consacré à l’Amérique dans le traité de Ryswick..
