SHIVES, ROBERT, imprimeur, éditeur et fonctionnaire, né vers 1815 à Aberdeen, Écosse, fils de Robert Shives et de Martha Wiggins, décédé célibataire le 7 janvier 1879 à Saint-Jean, N.-B.

Robert Shives, dont le père était négociant à Saint-Jean, naquit à Aberdeen, au cours d’un voyage que ses parents effectuèrent en Écosse, mais il fut élevé à Saint-Jean. En 1827, Shives devint apprenti imprimeur au New Brunswick Courier. Lorsqu’il eut terminé son apprentissage en 1834, il passa deux ans en Écosse avant de s’installer définitivement à Saint-Jean.

On doit à Shives d’avoir, au cours des années 40, apporté un élément nouveau à Saint-Jean, dont le caractère urbain s’accentuait de plus en plus. De 1840 à 1844, il dirigea l’Amaranth, l’un des premiers journaux littéraires des provinces maritimes. Ce journal mensuel dont chaque numéro avait environ 30 pages, parut 36 fois. Il publia un grand nombre de pièces littéraires en vers et en prose dont les auteurs étaient originaires du Nouveau-Brunswick ou de la Nouvelle-Écosse. Shives réimprima également des œuvres provenant de sources étrangères. Il emprunta par exemple à la London Sporting Review des articles écrits par le célèbre avoué de Saint-Jean, Moses Henry Perley*. Une nouvelle intitulée « Mark Meriden » semble avoir une autre origine ; elle avait l’Amérique pour cadre et avait été écrite par Mme Harriet Beecher Stowe. Shives cessa la publication de l’Amaranth en partie parce qu’il était déçu du public qui ne lui accordait pas l’appui espéré mais surtout à cause de « la modicité des bénéfices ».

Robert Shives continua probablement à exercer son métier d’imprimeur dans l’atelier d’un autre journal de Saint-Jean, puis il succéda à Moses H. Perley comme agent de l’immigration vers la fin des années 40 ou au début des années 50. Shives eut une vie très active. Il fut élu administrateur du Mechanics’ Institute en 1844 ; il était franc-maçon et membre de la St Andrew’s Society et avait rang de lieutenant-colonel dans la milice provinciale.
