ROMIEUX (Romulus, Rémus), PIERRE (Peter), chirurgien, né vers 1636 ; circa 1675.

Ce chirurgien, originaire de Béziers, au Languedoc, s’engagea en France, en 1659, envers Médard Chouart Des Groseilliers, à travailler durant trois ans au service de François La Chapelle, de Trois-Rivières. On sait en effet qu’il passa trois ans dans cette ville ; son traitement était de 200# par an et La Chapelle devait lui fournir les médicaments.

Pendant plusieurs années, il servit en qualité de chirurgien auprès de Radisson* et de Des Groseilliers, qu’il accompagnait dans leurs expéditions. Il était du nombre des « ouvriers de la première heure » qui accompagnèrent ces deux explorateurs à la baie d’Hudson en 1668, à bord du Nonsuch. On croit qu’il rentra en Angleterre l’année suivante. Les archives de la compagnie le désignent de la façon suivante : Peter Romulus « ye French chirurgion ». En 1672, il fit un autre voyage à la baie d’Hudson, où il devait s’établir. Sa pharmacie était apparemment un peu trop bien garnie et M. Pelling, l’apothicaire de la compagnie, s’attira vraisemblablement une réprimande pour lui avoir fourni des médicaments excédant ses besoins d’un bon tiers. Quand Romieux décida de s’établir au pays, on nomma en 1674, pour lui succéder, le chirurgien Walter Farr. Aucun navire cependant ne quitta la baie d’Hudson cette année-là, et ce n’est qu’en novembre 1675 que Romieux quitta le service de la compagnie.
