PÉROT, GILLES, prêtre, sulpicien, curé de Montréal, né vers 1625 dans le diocèse de Chartres, décédé à Ville-Marie en 1680.

Il entra dans la Compagnie des Prêtres de Saint-Sulpice en 1651 et vint au Canada en 1665. L’année suivante, il succédait à M. Gabriel Souart comme curé-missionnaire de Ville-Marie ; en 1678, il devenait curé d’office ou premier vicaire, le supérieur du séminaire ayant été constitué, par la volonté de Mgr de Laval*, curé titulaire à perpétuité.

Il officiait à la messe du 25 mars 1674, quand M. de Fénelon [V. Salignac] prononça dans la chapelle de l’Hôtel-Dieu, qui servait alors d’église paroissiale, le fameux sermon dont s’offensa si vivement le gouverneur de Buade de Frontenac. Un procès s’ensuivit qui valut au prédicateur de retourner en France. M. Pérot n’approuva pas son confrère, mais avoua qu’il en avait lui-même dit tout autant dans ses sermons sans qu’on l’inquiétât.

Curé de Ville-Marie durant 15 ans, M. Pérot eut la responsabilité de la construction de l’église paroissiale, dont la première pierre fut posée le 30 juin 1672 en présence du gouverneur de Rémy de Courcelle et de l’intendant Talon.

M. Pérot décéda subitement dans le jardin du séminaire, le 17 (ou le 16) juillet 1680, alors qu’il se préparait à célébrer la messe.
