O’BRIEN, EDWARD GEORGE, soldat, pionnier et homme d’affaires, né à Woolwich, en Angleterre, probablement le 8 janvier 1799, fils de Lucius O’Brien et de Mary Callender-Campbell, décédé à Shanty Bay, Ont., le 8 septembre 1875.

Edward George O’Brien passa une partie de son enfance à Cork, en Irlande, et en 1810 il s’engagea dans la marine en qualité de midship. Il resta dans la marine royale jusqu’en 1815 : le retour de la paix enlevait alors tout espoir de monter en grade. En 1816 il entra dans le 58e régiment d’infanterie comme enseigne et accompagna son régiment à la Jamaïque. Il fut promu lieutenant en 1820, se fit muter au 29e régiment en 1825, et en 1826 prit sa retraite avec demi-solde. Il reprit la mer dans la marine marchande.

En 1829 O’Brien émigra dans le Haut-Canada où il acquit une terre près de Thornhill. Il épousa Mary Sophia Gapper un an plus tard et en 1832 quitta Thornhill pour le lac Simcoe où il se bâtit une nouvelle demeure, « The Woods », à l’endroit connu par la suite comme Shanty Bay. O’Brien avait été nommé en 1831 agent de l’émigration pour le canton d’Oro. À ce titre on lui confia la surveillance de l’établissement d’une colonie de Noirs, mais le projet fut vite abandonné faute d’avoir pu attirer un assez grand nombre de colons. En sa qualité de juge et de commissaire de la Cour des requêtes, O’Brien joua un rôle de premier plan dans la vie de Shanty Bay ; on lui doit aussi, pour une large part, la construction de l’église St Thomas (Église d’Angleterre). Au mois de mai 1838, il reçut une commission de lieutenant-colonel et commanda le 3e régiment de la milice de Simcoe pendant la période troublée qui suivit la rébellion.

Vers 1845, O’Brien s’en alla vivre à Toronto où il devint secrétaire d’une compagnie en formation, la Toronto, Simcoe and Lake Huron Union Railway (plus tard la Northern Railway). Il fut également secrétaire de la Provincial Mutual and General Insurance Company. En 1848, il acheta le Toronto Patriot, journal rédigé d’abord par son frère, Lucius James O’Brien*, puis par Samuel Thompson* ; après quelques années, O’Brien le vendit à Ogle Robert Gowan. Il se retira des affaires vers 1858 et retourna à Shanty Bay où il mourut. Il avait eu plusieurs enfants ; l’un d’eux, Lucius Richard O’Brien*, devint un peintre bien connu.
