LAWRENCE, ALEXANDER, ébéniste, tapissier et musicien, né le 8 avril 1788 à Methlick, Écosse ; il épousa en Écosse Mary Wilson, et ils eurent quatre fils et deux filles, puis le 6 juin 1833, à Saint-Jean, Nouveau-Brunswick, Margaret Barr, et de ce mariage naquirent deux fils et trois filles ; décédé le 28 octobre 1843 au même endroit.

Parti d’Aberdeen, en Écosse, Alexander Lawrence arriva à Saint-Jean en 1817 à bord du Protector. En août, il ouvrit une boutique d’ébéniste et de tapissier rue King. En mai 1819, il forma avec Robert Sheed une société qui dura jusqu’en juin 1821. Le 21 janvier 1820, il prêta le serment de citoyen de Saint-Jean. Après plusieurs déménagements entre 1817 et 1819, il installa sa boutique rue Germain en mai 1820, puis rue King, près du Masonic Hall, en avril 1827 ; il demeura à cet endroit jusqu’à sa retraite.

Lawrence était venu à Saint-Jean en compagnie du révérend George Burns, affecté à la nouvelle église presbytérienne de la ville, St Andrew. Il eut l’occasion de faire de la musique dans cette église, dont il devint le premier chef de chœur. Il le demeura, présume-t-on, jusqu’à son deuxième mariage, puis fréquenta l’église anglicane Trinity. Peu après son arrivée dans la colonie, il avait annoncé son intention de donner des leçons de chant sacré, tant dans une classe hebdomadaire qu’à des particuliers. Son intérêt pour la musique se reflète aussi dans sa participation à la Sacred Music Society, dont il fut président jusqu’à sa mort, après avoir collaboré à sa formation en 1837.

Franc-maçon, Lawrence était membre actif de la St John’s Lodge No. 29 de Saint-Jean. Admis en avril 1818, il devint apprenti en juin et atteignit avec le temps les degrés de compagnon de l’ordre et de maître maçon. Le 17 janvier 1820, les degrés des Royal Arch Masons lui furent conférés au chapitre de Carleton. Il servit à titre de premier surveillant en 1827 et 1828, puis de vénérable l’année suivante. Délégué au convent qui forma la Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of New Brunswick en 1829, il fut élu premier grand diacre de cet organisme pour l’année 1830. En avril de cette année-là, en reconnaissance de ses éminents services, ses frères de la St John’s Lodge lui remirent une adresse rédigée en grosse sur parchemin. Par ailleurs, Lawrence collabora en 1838 à la fondation du Saint John Mechanics’ Institute, dont il fut administrateur de 1838 à 1841 puis vice-président en 1842.

En septembre 1842, Alexander Lawrence annonça qu’il quitterait les affaires vers le jour de l’An et que ses fils Joseph Wilson* et George Hunter prendraient la relève dans sa boutique d’ébénisterie. Ils la conservèrent d’ailleurs jusque dans les dernières années du siècle. Lawrence se retira dans une ferme à Norton et mourut moins d’un an après, à Saint-Jean.
