DAVOST, AMBROISE, prêtre, jésuite, missionnaire, né le 13 novembre 1586 à Laval (Maine, France), décédé en mer le 27 septembre 1643.

Ambroise Davost se fit jésuite à Rouen le 14 octobre 1611 et étudia surtout à Bourges. En 1632, il accompagna le père Antoine Daniel à l’île du Cap-Breton. Il demeura au poste de Sainte-Anne, exploité par le frère du père Daniel, le capitaine Charles, jusqu’en mai 1633, alors que Champlain le transporta à Québec. En 1634, il s’embarqua pour la Huronie dans la même expédition que les pères de Brébeuf et Daniel ; il en revint deux ans plus tard avec les jeunes Hurons [V. Teouatiron] qui devaient servir à fonder le « séminaire » du père Daniel près de Québec, où il demeura pendant deux ans comme tuteur des enfants français. Pendant ces années-là, il souffrit presque continuellement, surtout du scorbut ; en 1643, affligé d’une grande fièvre, il partit se faire soigner en France. Il mourut avant d’y arriver et fut enseveli en mer.
