ARMSTRONG, JAMES ROGERS, négociant, propriétaire d’une fonderie et homme politique, né le 17 avril 1787 à Dorchester (Iberville) dans la province de Québec, fils d’un Irlandais, John Armstrong, et de Mary Rogers, fille aînée du loyaliste James Rogers* qui commandait un bataillon des King’s Rangers pendant la révolution américaine, décédé le 13 juillet 1873 à Whitby, Ont.

James Rogers Armstrong perdit son père et sa mère alors qu’il était très jeune et on l’envoya à l’école dans le Vermont en 1796. Il vivait dans le Haut-Canada lorsqu’il épousa, le 9 octobre 1807, à Hallowell (qui devait être plus tard une partie de Picton), Hannah Dougall, fille de William Dougall, l’un des premiers médecins du comté de Prince Edward. Armstrong acquit des terres dans le canton de Hallowell et, étant fils d’un loyaliste, dans le canton de Vaughan, comté de York. Il cultiva la terre à Hallowell pendant une courte période de temps. Il devint ensuite négociant d’abord à Picton puis à Kingston vers 1822 et, enfin, à York où il ouvrit un magasin de tissus et d’articles de mercerie en 1828. Dans les années 40, il fonda à Toronto la firme J. R. Armstrong and Company, Toronto City Foundry, qui était spécialisée dans la fabrication de fourneaux dont certains avaient été conçus par Armstrong. À l’âge de 69 ans, il laissa la direction de la compagnie à son fils, James Rogers Armstrong, et alla s’installer à Whitby où il passa la fin de sa vie.

Armstrong participa à la vie politique dans les années 30. Il fit partie pendant quelque temps du premier Bureau de santé de York lors de l’épidémie de choléra de 1832. Il fut élu à l’Assemblée du Haut-Canada dans le comté de Prince Edward en 1836 comme conservateur mais ne se présenta pas aux élections de 1842. En 1837, il fut nommé juge de paix du district de Home.

Armstrong fut en membre éminent de l’Église méthodiste wesleyenne comme le prouvent le mariage de sa fille Mary avec le révérend Egerton Ryerson* (qui avait déjà été marié une fois) ainsi que celui de sa fille Eleanor avec le docteur John Beatty, professeur à Victoria College. Une autre de ses filles, Phoebe Anne, épousa George Duggan, recorder de Toronto et juge du comté de York.
